Ocean Pods

Has anyone ever ordered pods from Ocean Pods? Just wondering if they're legit. I'd like to add a mandarin to my tank and wanted to really make sure I had enough pods in my tank before I did!

buying pods? seems a little expensive, why not just buy more rocks and let them grow them out?

We did a group buy a while back, the frag swap at JH apartment, and they seem to be fine. You could see them in the bottle and I know that I have a lot more in my refug them before.

I think I got plenty of rock. It's a 72gallons tank and I have over 100lbs of live rock. But I never see them. Though I'm sure there's some there. I just want to be really sure I've got the food for the Mandarin. How much was the shipping from copepods.com?

if you guys want i have some rubble rock in my sump, you can have it. it has all shorts of pods and shrimps. free of charge... another good way of culturing pods is by putting a sponge in your sump, but this could cause nitrate problems...

if you want ,bring a pc of LR to me and ill put in my sump for a week or so ,It should be full of pods ,brittle stars and more ,if you like Or find someone in your are that has a refuge

I got a refugium, with some live sand, a few pieces of LR, and a ball of chaeto floating in it. (I never turn on the light in it, though!) I've been reading that pods grown well in chaeto. I've just never seen them now. I saw some, but very little, when I was taking out all my rocks and searching for a mantis a few months back. I assume they're in there....

I have Yellow Watchman Goby (incidentally, how compatible are they with Mandarins???) and I never really feed him. He hides 99% of the time. But occasionally he'll pop out. My assumption is that he must live off of pods. Possible competition for a Mandarin....bad!

How do pods get from a refugium into the tank? Won't they get ground-up in the pump?

They have an assortment of pods (amphi as cope). I was thinking about ordering from them since my pod pop was eradicated with just my pair of clowns.

These folks do seem to have the best deal I've seen so far for bottled pods. I'm surprised more LFS places don't sell them!

in my experience nearly any fish is compatible with a mandarin - they tend to do their own thing hovering all day around your liverock picking out pods and worms. you should certainly have no problem with a watchman goby. even bigger/agressive fish don't usually pay mandarins any trouble due to their bright coloring (which is interpreted as them being poisonous - although they are not).

i'm looking for someone to correct me here, but i don't think sandsifting gobies eat pods. they survive on leftover food/waste that falls to the sandbed as a result of feeding your tank. if you drop a few pieces of sinking pellet-type food near where your goby hangs out (at feeding time) you might be able to coerce him into making more public appearances.

I'll have to try dropping some stuff near where the Goby usually pokes out and see if he comes out more! I bought these sinking pellets...and I've been having problems sinking them. Most of them just start floating. What a PITA! :irked:

Well, I got my little Mandarin yesterday from New World. He's been swimming around all day today, picking at the rocks. So I'm guessing that's good!

No, not yet - there shold be stuff in there for him to eat for now. But I probably will in the near future.

I also remembered that back when I had my 29g I could see tonns of these crawling around, but I also fed the tank with marine snow once a week. I haven't been doing that in a long time. Wonder if that stuff had any affect on the size of the pod population. Perhaps I should resume using that.
