Buying a camera....

Alright guys well it looks as though I've dropped my camera 3 to many times. I'm looking into get a decent camera, digital of course. Probably trying to keep the cost under $500 and I'm only able to spend that much because my parents agreed to chip in for this one. Preferably a Digi SLR. If anyone knows of a decent one, preferably with interchangable lens' that would be great. I'm just starting to look into them.

Kris, I think the only way you'll get a DSLR for under 500 is to get one used, off Craig's list. I would be a little hesitant to spend that much on used stuff with no warranty though. I got my Sony DSC-H1 on CL for 350, but it was new-in-the-box sealed, with full warranty. B&H sells that one for 399, the best price around. DSLR cams start at over 600 there (they're the cheapest), plus tax.

I don't think it's that great, I have a real Nikon SLR 35mm. Supposedly, the shutter lag time is non-existant, same as film. But, that's good for sports, and no matter what you use, the auto-focus is always going to cause some lag. For macro, it's not necessary. You can get great pics with a good quality digital, I got one in the Super Zoom type. What make the most difference is getting a camera with a high quality image sensor. There are plenty out there without going DSLR.

I am currently looking to buy DSLR. I think Nikon D50 is the cheapest you can get and great quality. But it's little over you budget. BeachCamera sells it for $650 with 18-55mm lens and 1gig memory card. And I think you can get little cheaper from ebay, but still around $550 to $600.

Even for used DSLR, they are maybe few dollar cheaper than the new one. DSLR price doesn't really go down that much compare to regular point shoot camera.

Maybe if I save up for a little longer, with all the little things popping up I don't know when I'm gonna be able to actually buy one. $650 is a lot to explain to the parents :knockedou....

Kris if you can save up for the slr, by all means do so. If you ever get a chance to play around with one, you will never go back to point and shoot. Now for that price range you are almost limited to a P/S. Nikon and canon make very good all around cameras if you go that route. My old olympus served me well too. Just try to get one that offers the most controls and look for a large optical zoom lens, the digital zoom sucks. Good luck with your choice.

You can pick up canon digital rebel XT under 700 just shop around or you can wait for a month or so and get a 20D for ~800. Canon is coming up with a new body end of this month. Well if you get into canon you can brow my lenses anytime dude... or I will just come by and shoot along side you..

Jim, the big difference with a DSLR is the interchangeable lenses. also there's alot more features (75% of which the regular user won't use.) But for most people there's lots of higher end point and shoots that will work fine.

I already have canon lenses and flash, so I'm probably going to buy a canon. I may trade everything in and get credit towards a new dslr.

www.bhphotovideo.com has great prices, and they also have an honest used department. when they say the camera is a 10, it's a 10. When they say it's 5 it's a 5. You can also go in and take a look at the cameras.
