I'm gonna have to say get a Ro/DI :(.

Doing water changes would just keep the problem going. You could use distilled water but by the time you get rid of your problem, you would have spent more than an RO/DI.

Tap water catches up with you eventually. You've got phosphates so maybe a phosban reactor with phosban would work but that would cost you like $70?

as i always preach the rodi has worked wonders for me.. it might waste alot of water but ur tank would love you for it and the water will look great.. i strongly rec. the rodi unit... i had a brown algae problem due to i think tap water i did aggressive water changes for 3 weeks with rodi water... my rocks are brown free now...

and i also cut my lighting period from 11 hours to 8 hours.. i slowely changed it..

Calvin, I used to have a major diatom problem, but since I got my Ro/di unit like about 2 months ago, its almost all gone. I do a 15% water change every week. I tried to avoid getting the Ro for a while, but in the end you just have to go with it. I got the aquasafe unit off of ebay, and its great!

my tank is having hair algae problem. i have 250x2 MH....and no i do not use an RODI casue i cant afford it......any suggestions to how to get rid of it?

Bulb replacement for your halides may cost more than a RO/DI unit. More, when you factor in changes on a timely basis. Get a unit.

Besides the above menitoned solutions, how about a refugium? This would greatly help since you are not using ro/di. But you should really think about getting a ro/di if you plan to be in this for the long haul. Like jawwad said, the ebay one is really and works well. I had mine for 3 years now, no reason not to have ro/di water. Also emerald crabs and blue legs, turbo snails, etc.. helps.

Dude..down grade your tank if the bills are a problem..some of us can use some coral :)..then the waste water shouldn't be that big of a deal.....you are just a kid..lol...better listen to you parents or they will not allow you to have a tank...
i am going to make a 150 once i am done with school :)...i am happy with my nanocube-6 in college...
get an Ro/DI unit...if i didn't look silly carrying a unit into a bathroom in my dorm..i would have one..i got grilled for using tap water...i started distilled water...no algae problems.... just my 2 cents..
or..pay for half the bill...
