Welcome To MR!

Do you want to get cured or uncured rock?

I suggest if it's your first tank, get uncured and watch the nitrate cycle. You'll learn a lot about the tank, and it will give you time to reasearch your tank inhabatants.

Check the vendor forum. There's a bunch of vendors who can get really good live rock.

If you surf the board long enough, there's always LR for sale.

Welcome to MR. Always nice to see new members asking questions before jumping into it headfirst.

Depending upon the collection location of the rock, Fiji, Marshall Island, Tonga, Caribbean etc., will determine the amount of LR you'll want to use. Most people use between 1.25 - 1.75 lbs/gallon.

Some rock is more dense than others and it'll require more of it to fill the same space. The less dense the rock is, the more surface area it has and the more biological filtration you'll get from it.

i have been researching online stores and they have packages of 20-25 pounds, which one would you go for, i would prefer cured from what i have heard. People have also suggested buying water that has already been nitrate and ammonia free. What are your thoughts? how much sand would you suggest too? Thanks for all your help

I have ordered live rock from http://floridaliverock.com before and it was the nicest rock I have ever seen. Check out the pics on the site they are no exageration of the quality that was sent.

Just about everyone around here will suggest you invest in an RO/DI filter and make your own water. If you plan on having a tank for a while it will EASILY pay for itself in the long run.

Most pre-made saltwater is mixed at 1.021. Good for fish, but VERY bad for a reef.

I'd put enough sand to cover the bottom of the tank by 2" or so. Use new sand and get some live sand from a member's tank to seed your sandbed.
