yes I make them often, I also run one on my tank I feed heavy and my tank is low on nitrate and phosphate and DT is free of nuisance algae that is my data.

Can this be tied into my drain line from the overflow into the sump? or does it need its own pump?

Yes it can be tied to the drain I have mine this way, and yes you can use a separate pump.

I would recommend a separate pump or off the return pump. Running things off drains never seemed right to me...
