Does anyone culture pods? Is it really as simple as putting some in a bucket and keeping the water tinted light green with phyto? What about an air stone, heater or small powerhead?

These seem like huge pods... too big for a Mandarin to eat. Who would eat them? Would Mandarins eat the offspring?

Those are Amphipods. Mandarin gobies eat Copepods they are much smaller and do live and thrive in a fuge. I dont know about a bucket of phyto.

You can get these as tiger pods in the refrigerators of LFS. Dump a bottle in your system and they will take off. Provided you dont have a mandarin goby gobbling them up.

Yeah I've used tiger pods before but both of my LFS stopped carrying them for some reason. I want to bulk up my pod population as I have a pair of Mandarins on the way

just think of it as buying mysis or food pellets for your fish and coral. Thats the price you have to pay for the mandarin's beauty.

I actually grew the tiger pods in a bucket using exactly what you mentioned (phyto, air stone). Once a week i filtered some through a coffee maker filter and dumped the filtered pods in my aquarium. Kept it up for a year with no prob. Mandarin got fat

What temperature you keep your tank at? Tiger pods are Arctic pods and I don't think they thrive in Tropical tank temperature.

You should consider Tisbe, Tangerine and rotifers. These are tropical versions.

Hey Wingo, I didn't know Tiger pods were arctic, they've done ok in my tank in the past but I am leaning more towards the Tisbe pods from liveaquaria, if only because none of my local stores have Tiger anyway. Rotifiers have to be enriched, would that happen from the Phyto or would I need to supplment something else? Would Mandarins eat Tangerine pods? Liveaquaria says it's mainly meant for filter feeders.

I'm thinking of setting up a 5g bucket with a small heater, air stone and feeding Phyto weekly as mentioned above. Can I cover the bucket or do I need to keep it open? Is light needed? Is the air stone enough for water movement or should I get a small powerhead as well?

In case you couldn't guess I want to get this going for the pair of Mandarins you're getting for me

ALL pods and rotifers need to be enriched with phyto.
Liveaquaria sell the same Tisbe I sell.
Mandarin eats roti, Tisbe and Tangerine(I do not believe much filter feeder can eat adult Tangerine nor Tiger pods. They eat the babies.)
Unless your environment is cold, room temperature is good no need for heater.
Movement of water is a subject I still need to study. Live phyto seems to like a lot of movement, but you can just get algae paste or algae feast. Don't have to culture them yourself. Pods, grow better in slow water movement according to Todd of Atlantis Aquarium. To grow pods or roti, light is not needed and you just need to have a very small air hole.

BTW, I l already have one male one female green spotted mandarin right now but I remembered you want blue, correct? If green is acceptable, you can pick up now.
