What is the rarest trigger fish in the hobby today? I am fascinated by these fish. I know there not good for reef tanks but i'm thinking of getting a seperate tank for one, but if I do I want a really rare species.

Many thanks in advance for any help!!

In the hobby? Well, I have never seen a Titan Triggerfish in the hobby before - so that's pretty rare...

Do a search on Google for Images of the Titan Triggerfish and you'll see why...:)

The rarest is the goldenback and is the most money, then followed by rarity is the queen, than the crosshatch.

Umm, I don't know where you're from, but Queen Triggers are relatively easy to get here in Indiana. I see at least 15 or 20 in the various Indianapolis stores per year. Even the Crosshatch is becoming more common. 4 have gone through a store here in the past few months. They're available, it's just that they're a special order fish (what store wants to order a $400 trigger that might not sell, eh?). Also, they tend to be seasonal.

I would have to go w/ the Crosshatch for desireable but, rarely seen in an aquarium. Titans are something I'd be willing to bet that no one but God has in their tank! The Crosshatch is sexually dimorphic so a mated pair is easy to identify/order but, lotsa money. They normally make safe reef tank additions according to Scott Micheal's book, Marine Fishes a pocketexpert guide. He states that large ones may eat ornamental shrimp. Try finding some pics of a Bluelined trigger. It is awesome!

Somebody here on RDO has a titan. Forget who. It's a juvi, though, and looks just about identical to a pineapple trigger.

Man what a stinker that thing must be!! I checked Marine Central last night after posting my reply & I'll darned if they didn't have Red Sea Titans listed on availability. So there you go Trigger rarity guy, get you one of those & you will be a proud owner of ... of..... of......

Red Sea Blue line go for like 400.00 - 450.00. Crosshatches are about that if not more! Sharkky might know a little closer to mark than I do what they go for. We don't have a real saltwater LFS in my neck of the woods so I couldn't tell you what they run for sure. If you are into cool and inexpensive(when compared to Crosses & Clowns etc.) a red toothed niger trigger is a pretty fish. Not like they are hard to find so a healthy one would be easy to locate. I have to agree that Queens are not hard to get it is just that most LFS don't carry alot of Atlantics unless it is Royal Grammas or Queen Angels.

Well rare is a relative term. When you say rare what are you really asking? Rare in the trade or rare in nature? The reasons for rarity in the trade can be several things but usually it means the area they live in is either very remote or very deep.

As far as the titan goes, they are rare in the trade because they are rather drab looking when young and get very large and VERY nasty. Not a good candidate for any home aquarium of any size.

The crosshatch triggers are expensive because they tend to be found deep so take extra effort and care to collect. They are not rare where they are found.

There is an undescribed deepwater trigger found in Palau that has so far only been photographed at 500 ft by minisub ... so I would say this is the rarest trigger in the world. ;-)

Not that I know of. I have seen a picture that was sent to me by the person who took it. I can't post that without his permission. I'll see what I can do.

Crosshatch or Titans are the least common in the trade.

Careful of Titans, they can be evil incarnate in a tank. One local fish store here in Atlanta has one that is sort of a house fish. He's about a foot long and if you don't put dog toys or similar in his tank he will tear up everything he can touch. They do a demo where he grabs the end of a rawhide chew and plays tug. To my knowledge the aptly named "Diablo" has gone home with seasoned aquarists 3 times now only to be returned to the store within a week for going scorched earth on everything/one in his tank. They want about $500 for him. A bit steep for something that has his needs but unique and actually rather cool for the abundance of personality. If you want to know what they look like run the latin (Balistoides viridescens I think) through google images.

I don't have any personal experience w' Crosshatch triggers. Start w' the latin (Xanthichthys mentoand) and have patience searching in the trade.

I think the crosshatches are stunning. A friend of mine back in the uk paid $1500 for a large specimen. Now although not rare my next trigger is going to be a pink tail. I already have a ******, picasso, a clown and they all get on so well (at the moment)
