My neighbor recently went on vacation and asked me to watch over his fish. My question is, he has an octopus and left me no money to buy it live food. Im wondering if they will eat anything other than live food. I really am not too fond of my neighbor and am not really willing to spend money on live fish for his octopus. But at the same time i dont want to kill it. I have respect for the octopus, but not my neighbor. Thanks for your time

When I was raising O. joubini I fed the adults live fresh water mini-crabs. Basically they'll eat any scraps of fish, shrimp, squid, etc. if they been trained to eat dead foods.

Cheap saltwater clams or grass shrimp are a good food as well. They readily go for them. As for taking dead food, it will if it knows what it is. I spoke to someone at a state aquarium and they told me they acclimate all their octo's to eating from clam shells. That way, they can put anything they want into the shell and it will eat it. And the dinner plate is re-usable!

Secrest, what an incredibly odd position in which to find yourself. Caring for the pets of someone you dislike? That's gotta earn ya some god points. :)

hmmm... if you don't want to spend too much money on like food for the oct, then maybe you could try some cheap shrimp which you could always get from a fish shop near you, they should be quite easy to obtain and cheap.
