Hi All,

I bought a Sunset Anthias 3 days ago. The fish had just arrived at the store when I bought it. It was nice and plump without a mark on it.

Went through all the steps. testing water in quarantine tank and bag containing fish, acclimated the fish for an hour and a half with partial water changes, etc.

In the morning, less than 12 hours later it was dead. The oddest part was the fish was already floating at the top of the tank.

I have been keeping fish for over 30 years, though relatively new to marine, and have never had a fish die that quickly and to float so soon after death.

Could there have been something in the collection or shipping process that could have have caused this?

Would appreciate any info.

Thanks,

Penny

Penny, honestly who knows. If we assume all your parameters are correct in your aquarium, then we are left with either bad collection practices, poor shipping, or just a fish with bacterial or parasitic problems to begin with. Floating at the top is strange, but probably a result from the fish decaying and making it bouyant.
I used to run in and get the pick of the shipment at my local stores, but quickly learned its best to wait a few days to pick the livestock up.

Many (and I mean many) anthias do not survive more than a week or two after being moved into our tanks... they are not an easy to get species because of poor collection and/or poor shipping conditions. They might look alright, but still die.

I hate to say it, but its not at all unusual.

Thanks everyone! Your replies have been greatly appreciated.

I'm beginning to learn just how many fish are being collected that don't stand much of a chance for many reasons. From collection, to hobbiest, to conditions kept.

That's why it is so upsetting to me that this fish died so soon due to, what I believe (I could be wrong), no fault of my own.

This hobby sure can be a heartbreaker. And to think, I've never kept discus fish becasue I thought they would be too sensitive ;o>.

It is amazing how many corals and fish get imported that have little to no chance of captive survival... and basically what that tells you is to research until you turn blue any new possible tank purchases. Ask here and see what others have to say.

Oh, and by the way....
:welcome:
