Kaudern's Cardinals (Banggai Cardinalfish) breeding in my tank?

I have two Banggai Cardinal fish that are breeding :bunnies: in my tank. I see the babies in the male?s mouth. Does anyone know how long till they come out of the male?s mouth and if it?s ok to feed Cyclopeeze?

Mine were in the males mouth for about 3 days. They were still in there last night, but not this morning. No sign of the babies though so I suppose they were eaten or got messed up by the powerheads...

Thanks D. I have a feeling they will come out of the male's mouth soon as I see them swimming in there, but I will continue to feed cyclopeeze.

I have 2 sets of breeding pairs of PJ Cardinals they breed every 2 weeks on schedule.. I've never seen the babies but I have a lot of fish that can eat them pretty quick... They prefer to release the babies into urchins if that helps you...

Yeah if you want to try and raise the babies it would help to isolate the male

some people try to force the male to spit and then remove him from tank. I think BBS is better to start feeding the fry.

I have successfully bred Banggai in the past. I can't remember how long they stayed in the male's mouth but they where in there for awhile. I was never able to get the male out my tank before he released them. I also tried a plastic urchin with no luck either (never tried a real one).

The only way I was able to get them was buy configuring my sump, so that those that sucked over the overflow where confined to a section of the sump form which I could remove them. I usually would get 1/2 dozen or so each time they bred by this method.

Once I had them I would feed them recently hatched brine shrimp that still had the egg sac attached. I had two hatching stations set up and timed so that the would hatch just before I got up in the morning and when I got home from work. This way I was able to feed them twice a day.

If this sounds like a lot of work, it is.

Bob - Is the breeding for the PJ's the same as for Bangaiis?

As for the urchin issue, I have seen ( dont recall if it was here or elsewhere ) someone make a fake urchin out of wooden shiskebabob sticks and ( I beleive ) epoxy. He had success with that method.

Well - they came out yesterday and they are cute as hell!! I was just looking at my acros last night with the moon lights when I saw a little guy swimming around and getting tossed within the currents of my vortex so I netted it out. Then another, and another, and another one, and another...anyhow, I was able to catch 8 of them by 10:30pm. Some went into the overflows so I will see if they grow there and some unfortunately were eaten by the tangs . Anyhow, I have the eight of them in my in tank refugium...take a look (sorry for the quality of the pic) :lol_large

I've had three clients that had Bangii breed in there tank.

two in reef tanks and one in a FOWLR

one had a LTA that the babies hid in and survived.
one had a long spine urchin the babies again survived
the one in the FOWLR system I made a fake urchin out of plastic. They didn't make it.

When I say the babies survived I mean 2-5 babies lived. Didn't feed anything different they got whatever was flying around in the tank.

I fed them cyclopeeze and phyto or photoplankton (freeze dried) which ever one - it's redish in color. I am thinking they are better protected from any predators in the in-tank-refugium. One looked like it wasn't going to make it last night, but this morning all 8 looked great and in a tiny little school. I do see 3 in the overflow...I may get a net and get them out - hopefully the chances of survival will be great considering I have a good number of them.

I have 2 breeding pairs 1 on each side of my 180, i have babys growing out in the sump and in my fuge. The babys in the fuge went through the pump. They eat what ever i feed the rest of the fish.

I can't believe I didn't mention this when I posted previously.

I currently have a single Banggai cardinal, that I keep in a holding tank. I got him from a buddy of mine that had a breeding pair in his tank until he lost both fish during an extended power outage. About a year later he breaks down his tank, while we are tearing it down we find a full grown Banggai Cardinal living in the sump.

I have not put the fish into the display tank, as I want to find it a mate first. Anybody have a large fish looking for love?
