Even crowded like that, the survival rate of them is much higher than most tropical fish in here. I guess it has to do with the transist. The vendor would bagged the fish and put them on a wall waiting for the customer without temeperature control for the whole day and return them to the tank by the end of the day without killing the fish. Most of us would be scared to death to keep the fish in a beg for 3 5 hours from the LFS? In fact, I heard couple guys from the swap have their fish killed by the time they arrived home for just staying couple hours in the swap. I guess we need a spy how they do it in Hong Kong.

This is quite common in HK, and not only for vendor but hobbyist too. If you do a search on MR and the web you'll find pictures and video of hobbyist tank from HK, usually in the 100-150gal range, that are over stocked with large fish, mostly Angels. They seem to work and if a fish dies they just replace it. You'll also find some pictures of large die offs, sometimes 10-20 fish.

On one side, it?s really cruel to display fishes like that. No doubts.
However, what is amazing is that they are able to keep fishes that most of us not ever think in trying to keep...then, as you said, where is the key for their success?

What I have always found interesting is that many East Asian cultures history has always had a respect of nature and the balance between man and animal. Then you see this and i personally just say to myself wow, mankind has come a long way from killing only what you will eat to "killing" for aesthetics. It may work, but I dont agree with that. Especially the sump portion. Crazy.
