Engineer gobi question

We bought an engineer gobi a few months ago and I just recently found out that they do better as a pair. We don't have a pair. We have one. he seems to be doing fine. He has doubled in size and eats like a pig. What is the reason why they would do better as a pair? Will I have problems later just having one?

no not at all, I had one for many years and they get really big. But as they grow they look like a eel.

they are community fish, thats all. They do better in groups.

They also get large and dig the hell out of the sand.

I have seen people keep them in bare-bottom tanks - pretty cool how they live in the rock holes/caves.
