New Catalina Goby

Hello,
Just wondering if anyone owns one of these guys. I introduced him to his new home last night, and seems be be doing well. I know these guys prefer cooler water. Has anyone hurt their zoas or sps corals with a cooling their water a couple degrees. That's all.

Not sure of your tank temp., but you probably should be MORE than a 'couple' degrees cooler, if you hope to keep him, more than a few weeks!

Might want to find someone with a temperate tank if you can't get yours down to at least 72.

I'm running at 75 right now. I don't know how much cooler to go. I don't want to kill my clown or zoas. I have a nano 16gallon so pretty much a couple degrees could sweep my entire setup.

well ive had one for about a year now and my temp goes up to about 81. and as low as 74. He eats like a pig and is a great fish to have. good luck with him and dont forget to feed your fish everyday.

They're beautiful specimens, but I don't think that they're a good choice for a reef tank. He could possibly sustain 71-72 degrees, but it's questionable whether or not your corals can for a long period of time. Good luck!

Thanks guys. I'm thinking he will be ok, as long as my temp don't go into the 80's. I bought him from somethingsfishy. It's a lfs down here in Rhode Island. I know I'm on manhattan reefs, but little rhodey doesn't have a good blog. Lol shhhh

+1 , I've also have one in a 15 gallon nano with. normal temperatures. I would be more concerned with his tankmates. It is an extremely peaceful fish and will hide if bothered. Mine is in with a scooter blenny, possum wrasse and shrimp goby and is loving life

It's all about acclimation as long as you keep your params in check he should be fine..if mheaven can do it so can you..you don't want to keep changing your temperature because you are going to stress everything out and probably get ich. Don't fix what isn't broken.

This is a colder water fish. One year isn't really proof of a healthy life. Most mandarin fish can live 6-12 months in a non-suitable system. The best best is to either keep this fish at a proper native temp, or give it to someone who can.

I know of some people who have kept these fish for years, but all of them have kept them in cold water reefs. FYI, strawberry anemones and some other cooler water corals and fish are really nice if you have a chiller that can accommodate the cooler tank. Good luck.

Beer.. Mandarins in general do not do well in captivity from what I hear regardless of anything. I have kept many fish in "improper" conditions and had great success. Unless a fish is wild caught it's "naural conditions" are irrelevant. The same rules don't apply to tank bred fish because they don't come from those text book standard conditions. I'm not saying this fish is tank bred because I have no way of knowing but my point is that you could really acclimate anything. If it works for evolution of animal species it can work for temperature in fish tanks. I kept Royal Plecos which are supposed to be at a ph of 6.5-6.8 in planted aquariums with drifood and more acidic water with 74-76 degree temp and I had them in with my african cichlids in 8.2 ph and 78-80 degree temp for YEARS. The only real way to know if it will work is to try. Good Luck Acone.

With a proper sized tank and enough food, they actually do fine.

The water is currently 63 degrees in Catalina, which is about 17 degrees cooler than most people keep their reef tanks. It will drop in to the 50s within a few months. The examples you just posted are 2-6 degree variations. I'm talking about a 15-30 degree variation.
