While wedfr was trying to get people in on a group buy for supplies for DIY projects, a few of us came up with the idea of having a DIY get together night. This would happen once or twice a month depending on the project at hand.I believe it's a great idea for those of us that know a few things here and there to share with the with the rest (i really don't know much, but i'm a fast learner...lol).we could work on kalk & calcium reactors, skimmers, stream style pumps, lighting, sumps etc.....What are your thoughts about the idea???

I have enough routers for everyone
you know I'm there.
I think a reactor or skimmer should be the first thing we do.
It covers the skills you'll need for most of the diy projects.
mmm, acrylic covered donuts... ;)

I'm definitely up for it as I am about to launch into a completely new setup where everything is DIY. Seaswirls, moonlights, skimmer, refugium, lights, stand,.. the works.
just let me know where.

isnt Brooklyn the centre of the universe?

I could wait for the DIY night, I just started on my new stand this afternoon. I should have it finished and ready to paint in another week or so. So far its cost me Nothing! ( I found the wood on the street)

Sorry spykes I found an old bed on the street and ripped it apart.
but ended up having just enough to do the job. Last time i bought cheap wall studs at Dykes lumber (they're like $5 for an 8 foot length) for the frame. Building sites are a good place to "find" plywood, especially on the weekend when the builders arn't around.

...is Brooklyn the center of the universe? hmm I always thought New York below 14th street was the center of the universe...

so when are we deciding the first DIY night, and whose bringing the donuts?

and where are we meeting?

it appears that more people on the board are in brooklyn than anywhere else, would only make sense to have the first one in BK.but the major issue i see is a location for such an event.anyone want to host the first???can't mind the noise, dust, chips, somewhat big enough for a small group etc...how does two weeks sound??i was thinking 4/23 or 4/30 to give us more time to prepare and come up with ideas.
i guess we can post what we would like to be the first project and majority takes it...

for a first project i was thinking maybe a skimmer, i guess it can be pvc or acrylic, depending on the look you're going for.if you get a little creative you can make pvc look good. heck if they make plywood tanks i don't see why a plywood skimmer wouldn't be possible if someone wants to go that route...j/k.

if you make a skimmer with more water volume than your tank is that a bad thing?
I'm thinking using 4x8 sheets of plywood and some saran wrap ;) , I'm just kidding, I know you have to use silicon before you saran wrap it.

I think having the meeting in BK is fine, I think either of those dates will work for me. I like the idea of making a skimmer first.
but what kind, there are so many to choose from now. what kind do you guys think is the best design?
