Hi,

I'm brand new to the site and would like any recommendations on what stores to visit. I from Texas and will be visiting the Manhattan area from June 27th-30th, i will be staying close to central park...recommendations on where the locals eat would be great as well!

Also are there any wholesalers in the area....I'm looking forward to the visit...

Thanks,
Ray

i would recommend maximum reefs in mt vernon, its only about a 25 minute ride from central park! small shop but always great stuff there! blue star aquaria will be close to you, also a small shop, i think it's in the 50 something street, there are a lot of mixed emotions about fishtown usa in queens, it's a more larger shop that's also interesting! all depends on what you want to see!

When visiting NY for a few days from out of town you are NOT going to go to Yonkers or make the trip to Fishtown in Queens.
In Manhattan you have 3 choices:
1) Manhattan Aquarium--( Info above) Must see
2) Blue Star Aqua--- ) small, mostly fish and very near where you are staying.
3) New World Aquarium--- E. 37th St. ( ?) --- pretty mixed reputation with members here based on attitude, but pretty good selection.

As far as restaurants go--- the list is endless.

Everyone else has already given you ideas on the LFS, let me try to give you some of my choices of eartery. I literally grew up on St. Marks. There are couple Japanese BBQ and resturants worth staying if you are upbeat person. Note: these places are noisy and you can drink beer or my favorite is vodka on calpico. You need to get to the right resturant for the best tasted version though. Yakitori Taisho(5 St. Marks) is the one you should consider-both BBQ and Calpico drink. Also try the resturant on the 25 St. Marks. and experience the "paddler style of Japense food." Remember to amke the cotton candy with your own hands at the front door upon leaving. Their draft beer in pitcher is very cheap! There were gimmick resturants there too, so watch out. For Indian food, there is a place on Avenue A, I think I will try to search for the name and locations around 14 street. They are super crowded but lots of fun because everyone of every nations were shoulder to shoulder eating and yelling in the tightess resturant ever. They are even tighter than the Taiwanese, resturant cellar(if you have been there before.) You can bring your own liquor to drink along with your dinner. There is a grocery with multi-nation brands of ale and beer to choose. many taste so so but some are excellent. Which one is which, I never remember. The landmark is hundreds of chili lamps in the display windows. It's scenic thing to do. If you have the cash to spend try the restuarant by the UN High School-river side view and all VIPS. Prepare to spend over a thousand per head, I was told(lucky me, I never need to pay). Nobu is also a great choice-MUST reserve table in advance. Their Kobe beef is considered top notched-not for me though-just beef again to me-ALL my friends love it-they said the beef melt in your mouth-say what!? why am I paying $200 for something melt in my mouth before I can eat it-j/k? Remember don't go for the Nobu Next Door, the food is not the same and the service is not the same either.

Out of the three in manhattan, manhattan aquariums would be my preferred store. They have huge beautiful display tanks, a wide variety of corals/fish/inverts, and also a very friendly staff that will have substantial conversations with you. Hope this helps.
