I know these DIY threads are threatening to take over the entire bulletin board but the others were getting so long and have so many others subjects being brought up i figured I needed to start a new specific thread for the DIY at my place.
The DIY afternoon is taking place at my house in Park Slope Brooklyn on May 1st, kicking off at 1:00pm. We will be making a Euro Reef type skimmer. PM me for the address.
While there isnt really enough room for everyone to make something I am about to do an order of stuff - Uni seals, nylon screws, Orings etc. - so if anyone wants to make a skimmer based on what they have learned on the day they can put an order in for the parts, I wil buy them and have them here for collection on the day.

good idea aaron, I was thinking of doing this but was afraid to start another thread.

this thread should be for a list of what people want to make, and the parts. it should help keep things organized, let's hope.

I need parts for 2 skimmers. and 1 reactor.
now some one just needs to tell me exactly what parts I need ;)

I think we should stick to the skimmers on this thread as its the first project and things get very confusing very quickly for someone with a short attention span like me.
I think we need some input from Wedfr as to what and what sizes we need but I think for each skimmer we need
8x nylon thumbscrews (size?)
2x uniseals. (size?)
Any ideas what else we need?
would you use orings or gaskets to seal the sections?

you need more thumbscrews, I read there should be a screw every 1.5", of course it depends on the size of the flange.

gaskets are easy, you can use flat sheets of rubber, O rings might work better, but you need to rout a circle to fit them.

the skimmers and reactors use the same parts, that's why I included it.

also do we want to make seperate collection chambers for the skimmers, it would be a good add on, and i don't think they are hard to make. you just need that shut off valve.
check out the ones JDM makes.

Sorry jim, it was only going to be more of an announcement of the event, but I guess we just cant help help getting into the DIY details.

John, the skimmers on the JMD site have 8 thumbscrews on them. As far as the collection cup goes i think for the first day we should keep it simple and just show how to make a couple of skimmers - a big one (yours) and a small one (mine). The techniques will be the same for collection cup so people could do that later.

I definatly agree lets not go crazy, lets stick to a skimmer for the first time. Its gonna get real confusing real fast if we start doing multiple projects.

I do not want to get into making flanges. It will be pretty much impossible with the tools we will have available not to mention that each differnt size flange needs a whole new setup. The whole thing with flanges is tool setup and of course having the tools. I think we should just go with the standard way of making euroreefs and use unions to connect the collecion cup.

From reading some other threads it seems peopel want to make a recirculating euro with a wet neck. Ive never done a wet neck althoguh my next skimmer was going to have one but since i have no experience with them ill leave this for someone else to show everyone. Is Everyone making a recirculating design?

Last thing: I have 2 conditions for coming and helping out.

1) I am assuming im going to be building a skimmer so everyeon can watch how to do it. If this is how you guys want to do it then im going to ask that the skimmer i build be built from everyones scrap material and that the skimmer be given to an MR member (i have someone in mind but i dont want to post his name in case he doesnt want me to. Hes been looking for a skimmer and hasnt been able to find one he can afford right now) So i think that would be anice thing to come out of our DIY day.

Condition #2 Bring me some frags, my tank is empty from the crash i had a couple months ago.

Conditon #2 is not manditory just thought id hold you guys up for a few frags.

Ill post tonight or tomorrow on parts list

for me I don't need to walk away with a complete skimmer, I would like to walk away with the complete understanding of how to build a wet neck skimmer, and how to plumb a skimmer. I think wedfr is right it will get way to confusing and time consuming if we have multiple builds going on. I think we should make one skimmer, maybe two if they are different designs, and watch how they are made. aaron this will prevent the police from coming and deporting you as well, how would we explain that to your wife? look we made you a nice skimmer, and by the way aaron got sent home. ;)
depending on how many flanges need to be cut, aaron and I can do this at my place before and after the DIY day. I think we could handle one set of flanges per person. this will be done using vector works and the "laser" machine. we will need to know the size tubes everyone is using, and we will need the materials. lmk if this is a good plan. otherwise your going to have to make templates and do it the old fashioned way

re: frags for wedfr, I have some m.digita for you. most of my stuff is still too small to frag.

yes yes frags for me!!!! haha

If you can do flanges on the laser machine that would be pretty cool

Each size tubing would need a differnt vectorworks diagram done. I would recoment goign with gaskets becasue routing in an oring groove is trial and error so itll take a lot of scrap material to get the righ size groove for each oring wwe do.

Go with 1/4-20 thumb screws.

Ill bring a tap if somone reminds me to.

once we get the kehole's done in vector works all we have to do is change the size of the circle and layout the new keyhole placements. it's a lot easier than making new jigs

I would definitely want to come and see how you guys do the magic. I need to build a skimmer soon as I am running skimmerless. This would be a great experience and to learn more about it.
