Ok lets see I have my new 75 gal tank which has (2) 1 1/2'' bulkheads drilled to the top and the 30 gal sump which has (1) 1 1/2''bulkhead. So my original plan was to have ONE bulkhead as the drain and the other as the return with a eyeball jet. Now my pump of choice will be a mag 18. I came to the realization that may be too much flow on one side of the tank and too little on the other. So I have a new plan. The 2 bulkheads are going to be my drain. My drain will be 2 inch pvc that meets in a T and goes down to a 1 1/2 '' pvc into the sump. I fugure that 1 1/2'' will be enough so there is no backflow. Now as far as my return, I am going to need to convert the mag 18 3/4- either 1 1/4 or 1 1/2 for max flow out of my mag. Now im going to run this 1.25 or 1.5 to the top where its going to split into (2) 1.25 into the tank. One on the right one on the left...so any ideas thoughts comments?

One of the pics dont show up for me. I didn't realize that it would cost that much more.

Forget what i just said about the pics not showing. It showed up after a refresh. Thats a way I haven't seen an overflow done yet.

RG,

I would cap the bulkhead to the sump and drain the dual 1.5's directly into the left side of the sump. Do you plan to baffle the sump?

believe me, I have been doing plumbing for the last few days (and will continue into the weekend everyday) and recommend you keep it simple.

As for the returns, whatever you do, make sure you put ball valves between the outlet and the pump somehwere outside the tank to be able to manually balance (or not) the flow. Water will take the path of least resistance and you will want to manage that manually.

Also, if you want, I could drill the 30 for you and you could add a second bulkhead to the sump.

Hope this helps,

House

Reefguy, that is almost exactly my setup. My 75 gal uses two 1.5 drain and goes down to my 30 gal sump. I put a durso on drain, where you have an elbow.. I heard that its suppose to keep the noise lower. I'm still getting alot of noise and microbubble from the drain. I thinking pf redoing my plumping.. I'll post some picture when I get home..

House: the bulkhead in the sump is for the pump, the drain is going directly into the sump

CTX: Im not too familiar with plumbing....whats a durso?

btw guys this would be a much better idea than one drain and one return through the other bulkhead right

Check out this pic and link. I did something similar a while back and it was pretty quiet.

You do two of these comming out the back of the tank. It will work nice and be quiet. Think about getting an overflow done its quite simple and you have a great opportunity to do it now. The way you set up your drains I would make a long over flow running the lenth of the tank and comming out about a couple of inches. (actually this is an idea Vic and I were kicking around.
