looks like i spoke too soon, i was moving some rocks around and one fell on my pepermint shrimp. gotta try to leave things alone.

would a cleaner shrimp get to big for a 5 gal??

Cleaner in a 5 is fine. Try to get a small one. It'll grow. You just might have to feed it.
