I've been thinking about setting up a jellyfish setup. I know it's quite difficult, but the challenge calls to me! I just started to do some research on it... and woah!, talk about maintenance. Found a website that has the all in one setup of course. But I'd like to build it from scratch. Any feedback that can help change my mind about this?

As much as I would love a jelly tank, I think feeding is what keeps me away. Well, feeding and I don't want to run another tank. Another tank is more maintenance, food, room, electricity. And Jelly's aren't easy to care for.

Have you ever seen the jelly tank at duvet? now thats cool i think thats reason enough to setup your own tank that and you will be one of the few.

those tanks are crazy expenisve, i've remember when i used to volunteer at the NY aquarium and they started making the jelly fish exhibit...the keepers said the smaller tanks ran a few grand and the big ones were half a mil to buy.

WOW why so expensive? :bigeyes2:

Jellyfish tanks are set up with a system called a Kreisel. These are round tanks (on end, like a tire, not laying flat) that have overflows and returns all around the tank. This keeps the jellyfish suspended in the water column, without sucking them into the overflows.

They are very specialized tanks, hence the bg bucks.

it's one of my projects chris. plankton isnt hard to culture but i need to know how this suspention system works and i can always bend a sheet into a cylinder.

This is the "Readers Digest" condensed version  . Also, very simplistic in description, it does get more complicated.

I believe there are a couple of ways to accomplish the 'levitation' of the jellyfish. The first one is the cylinder. This round piece of acrylic is sandwiched between two flat pieces of acrylic. Holes or bulkheads would be drilled into the part of the cylinder that if it were a tire, would be the part that would be touching the road. The space around the cylinder holds the return water and it gently flows into the round tank through these holes. The round tank facilitates no dead spots, thereby keeping the jellies in suspension. (Remember, this is the short and sweet version).
