Mini cycle ????

I set up a Jbj 28 a few weeks ago with dry aragamax and about 12 pounds of fully cured rock. I added a damsel and a clean up crew and never really got a spike in amonia so yesterday I added 15 pounds of live rock from an established system. This morning my parameters are as follows

Amonia 0.25
Nitrites 0.0
Nitrates 20.
PH 8.4
Temp 79.7

Think its just a mini cycle ???

Fresh tank... dry sand... and "cured" rock. No buddy... that is a cycle. That is an ammonia spike. Poor fish a CUC.

hopefully everything hangs on sometimes your livestock can pull thru.

If it was a full cycle wouldnt you get nitrites before nitrates ??

I honestly stopped testing my other tank because it would stress me out if I saw anythibg abnorma. I do my weekly water changes and as long as everything is open and looks healthy I don't worry.

Mini cycle would happen if you had an established tank already setup and added something new like a new sandbed to already established rock (from that system not from another) or something similar to that you would never see ammonia especially not 0.25ppm!

You're in the middle of a full new cycle and you've already added livestock and inverts, not good! I had a mini cycle a few months ago after I added a fresh new sandbed and only removed half of my old sand! I went through a small nitrate spike and had diatoms a few days later, never had nitrites and certainly never got any ammonia.

That's a brand new cycle you're going through, there might be some bacteria that's comsuming some of the ammonia and nitrite straight to nitrate but not enough to fully consume all of it going by your test numbers. Look at it any way you want your tank is currently in the middle of cycling.
