ur better off setting up a 10g tank... Then again you dont have much coral to lose. Its up to you. I personally dont like using any chemicals when dealing with ich in a display tank, imo. Just buy a 10g, airpump and a sponge filter. Im sure that might run you under 20 bucks... You can treat the fish there without putting chemicals directly into the display. Then just save it for next time or to quarantine your fish whenever u buy any.

In about 6-8 weeks you should be ich free, just make sure you leave your display tank free of fish for a while. I seen people leave a display tank fish free for 3months just to be sure. I am not sure how much time exactly would be necessary but you should research that and any information first before applying it.

i have been in the hobby for about 5 years seriously (about 15 if you include the tanks you grow up with as a kid) i never knew about the life cycle of this ICK or ICH. thank you everyone for all the insight on this problem. i guess quarantine is the only option after more research i have been doing for anyone else who needs help as well. pick up a small 10 gal tank and quarantine everything that comes in.
i do have a UV sterilizer that i just got and i am looking to put that on the tank but i have been told that with a reef setup it not good to keep it running. any input on UV Sterilizers?
i am going to be adding my cleaner crew that i ordered online tomorrow, will they be affected by the ICH?
for a quarantine tank what do you guys put inside the tank some LR? SAND? CHETO?

No sand/rock/chaeto in the QT tank. You are not looking to cycle it unless you plan to keep it up for a long while - which you have no time to do if you already have an Ich issue.

You might consider putting the UV on the QT tank, it won't help much but is better off there with your current issue than killing good bacteria in your DT

UV sterilizers are useless. It's like bringing a squirt gun to a house fire.

They do nothing truly beneficial or even really useful except run up your elec bill.

I disagree with this. If you use a properly set up UV it will help keep harmful plagues of pelagic bacteria and parasites in check. It won't eliminate them but it will prevent disastrous outbreaks.

Will a UV get rid of Ich, no. Mostly because you can't get all the water and parasites to flow through it. But what you'll find is once you place a UV on your tank you'll have less breakouts and general better overall health. The true test to this is looking at a LFS tank, those who bring in new fish all the time. You'll find that most have less problems with a UV in place, especially if the bulbs are regularly replaced.

Dealing with an outbreak now in my FOWLR...never had an issue like this before in my 20 years of fishkeeping. It has been pretty disastrous, but I'm trying to not let it get me down. At least my reef is thriving!

From what I have left(1 maroon, 1 Clarkii, Zebra Moray, Snowflake eel, and a copperband) it seems like they may have developed a partial resistant to the parasite. I moved any fish showing signs to a hospital tank and tried to treat with Ich Zap with no luck saving them.

So I'm looking to move the clowns and copperband to a tank to do hypo for 6 weeks or so. I'm going to leave the tank with out fish for 6 weeks.

QUESTION: While trying to cure the display of the parasites, do you think I can leave the eels in the DT, or do I need to rehome them also?

How long to quarantine new fish..

Having an ich problem since my tank upgrade.

Well, I agree with you about LFS uses, but personal use I disagree. In my personal opinion from what ive read, and use of a UV S for about 6 months, i dont see a need for them. Having a proper qt eliminates the need for them really.

But this is a topic for another thread. Sorry for the hijack, MBG.

I am also dealing with ich. I bought a fish without really looking at it and it has ich. 100% me being an idiot. But I had to let the fish die that I couldnt catch and am just waiting the 8 weeks and feeding the tank twice a week to keep the bio up. Sucks because I dont have room for a QT, and this was my first fish from a new vendor.

You can keep inverts in the tank.
