Go with a Canon 60D. Honestly a full frame is not that big of a deal for basic consumer.
The key is LENS! If you really want to take good pics you will need a decent body and then the Canon 100mm Macro lens ($550).
I have the Canon 50D and Love it. Look at the 60D.

Since you are in the City, i would goto B&H in Manhattan.... Look at them there.
But then what you can do is then price shop online and see if you can get a good deal out of state, so you dont have to pay sales tax. Since I am in NJ I always buy from BH on internet and have shipped. The tax on the camera is worth it..
But make sure that you don't buy one of those ALL IN ONE PACKAGES!
Adorama is a reputable place along with Beach Camera..

And if you really want to be able to take really really really good pics. you will need
Camera (Canon 60D, or a good Nikon, but i am loyal to Canon)
Good Tripod (a cheap one will work, but any movement can hurt)
Remote Release (that is used so you can snap the pic without touching the camera)
The reason that the 2nd 2 are needed, is that if you want a very clear picture, you want to shoot with a low ISO setting and a closed aperature (high setting). The combination of low ISO and High Aperature will require a very slow shutter speed. Any movement with the camera will cause blurring.
Now you can shoot with High ISO and open aperature so you can increase the shutter speed, but then the clarity of the image decreases. If you are shooting under blue lights or low light it is difficult while handholding the camera.

Hey the iPhone 4s DOES take great pictures nothing to lol about. In all honesty the camera has so little to do with it, you can take great pics with a mid-range dslr and a great macro lens. If you have it like that then spend more on the lens and less on the camera.
