Hi,
I've been reading the forums here for a few years but this is my first post. I've had a saltwater tank in some form or another for more than 13 years, my latest tank is a 47Gallon column. I only have a few frags right now and some small fish because of my current tank constraints.

I am considering an upgrade to a 120 gallon system in the near future, but I am still learning about what the requirements are. I've never run a sump, or any other advanced life support systems, just kept to the basics such as HOB skimmer, and fluval filter.

I am looking forward to the december frag swap at Pratt. I hope to meet some new friends and learn alot from everyone.
Thanks,
Justin

Hi Justin, welcome to our family! Here you will find some very great individuals as well as some not so nice ones. But the great ones far out number the others, so please do not get discouraged by the few.;)
There is a fountain of great information to be had here, and many will love to help you in any way they can.
Sumps are not that hard to deal with. They are actually much easier then the HOB & Fluval. Once you make the switch you are going to love it so that you will NEVER want to go back.;)
A 120 is a great size! Which are you going for? 48" X 24" X 25", 60" X 18" X 26", 30" X 30" X 31", or the 72" X 18" X 21". I loved my 5' 120.

Best wishes, and again Welcome to the MR family!

Oh yes, you will enjoy the Frag Swap......

Thank you for the warm welcome everyone!
I am planning on a 48x24x24 setup next. my current 47 gallon column is 30" high and I find it very hard to work on, even with a step ladder. So I look forward to being able to reach things.

My main concern with the sump is the sound that it generates, and the additional maintenance. With my current config I can go away on vacation for a week and only have to setup an auto feeder. I'd like to be able to have that level of autonomy with the sump, but realize that may be an expensive proposition. I want to make sure that all work is a simple as possible. I will post a more detailed question at a later point, but my initial plans call for the DT to be in the den and the sump/equipment to be in the attached garaged behind the wall.

IMO there is really not an additional maintenance. Just think of a sump as your fluval. Plus gives you the benefit of being able to add other filtering option.

I would think that you would need to have some sort of Top Off system for your current system, but having a sump automating it makes it even easier.

Welcome to MR!!
