I just priced out some plants for my deck in the city, and I have to say I'm in sticker shock.
I'm looking for some tall ornemantal grasses, and some evergreens, flowering vines.
Does anyone know of a nursery in the area with reasonable pricing?
here are some photos to illustrate the prices I saw

holy crap :D i don't know of any in the area around you, but there are quite a few on the island. the one i usually go to is on francis lewis blvd in queens though, if you head towards northern, can't remember it's name off the top of my head, but it is on the left hand side as you are driving towards northern blvd. they might not have what you are looking for, but the prices there should be lower than that lol.

if you want to start out small here are some of the same plant at much more reasonable prices

cool, thanks for the links Jennifer. I'll check them out now. I just ordered some ornemental grasses online from naturehills.com.
I got 8 for 14. each plus 18. for shipping, not a bad deal.

no it does not seem hard to get, the place had a huge selection, and that was a small one. there were some for 900-and up. that's what you get for shopping in bridgehampton, the nursery has awesome stuff but the prices will make you feel really poor.
you should see what they get for the little specimen tree's. probably equal to 30 good sized acro colonies.

hey Michael, I was thinking about checking out the plant district, but I'm not sure if there prices would be good for garden plants. it's worth looking though, I'm pretty close to them.

the reason that one is so expensive is because it is such a slow grower. gets to be about 20" tall and 24" wide over 90 years. they are used for bonsai alot. but if i could make a suggestion on a nice plant, try a hoya. they do great outside in the summer, but have to be brought back inside in the winter and some bloom very easy, while others are a pain, here is a link to one of the easy bloomers, btw the flowers smell great :D

if you would like to try them, i know of a great lady in hawaii that has many varieties

i think the one jennifer is talking about is called garden world. there's another one close to garden world. they're a little more expensive, but they have a nice selection and the people who work there are a lot nicer and more helpful. i'm not sure what it's called, but if you go striaght up from 47th ave (street numbers going higher) the store is right there. it's got a green on awning. 47th Ave interesects with fracis lewis right where garden world is. hth.

There's a place over on 8th street (or is it 4th,) and lafayette/bowrey. I'm not sure, but I used to walk by it on the way to the bar. There's also some place around 14th on the west side.

Have you tried Lowes and Home Depot for the basic stuff?
