Just wondering how or what people factor in when setting up or selecting sumps. Is it a combo of available space and function or more on function? Thanks for input, I will hopefully doing a build soon and if I use factory stand I have a decent length for a sump but on narrow side.

I'd like to have sump and fuge in one unit if possible..

Sump should be setup as big as the available space permits, but also taken in to consideration if you want room for reactors and storage :) :confused yet:?

If you want a fuge then determine largest that will fit, determine skimmer size, and then return area and fuge area can be decided.

On my 180 I ran a 75g and loved it because I had room to the right to put my reactors and some supplies.

HTH lol

Kind of what i figured. i thought i would ask for opinions anyway. at the moment i am not as worried about storage, that can easily change in future though. With that in mind i guess ill find something that offeres best of everything. at the moment its looking like a 38l or 40 l may be best fit, 55 if i dont do external pump

Important factors when deciding on a sump.
1- the most important water volume when you have a power down, it should handle the volume of water from your dt without over flowing.
2- enough room to house a skimmer.
3- large enough of a return area to handle evaporation.
3- ample space for macro algae.
