Turning an R/O canister into a micron tank filter?

A week after putting the sand in the new reef tank and the water is still like milk. I hooked up a H.O.T. Magnum with a micron filter this weekend, but it's barely making a dent. At this rate it's going to take a month for the water to clear.

So, I began thinking (a dangerous thing) and was wondering, is there was a way to rig up an R/O canister with a micron filter and use it to filter the fine particles out of the water column? If not, anybody got a filter (a diatom filter maybe?) that I could borrow that would do the equivalent?

That seems strange if I remember correctly it only took a day or so for my tank to look crystal clear !!
As far as the Rodi I remember a guy who won totm on reef central some turned an Rodi into a reactor using it with carbon and phosban not sure about the micron filter

turn your skimmer on.unless you didnt rinse the sand out very well it should be gone in a day

It was live sand so I didn't rinse it. I expected it to be cloudy, but not THIS cloudy for this long.

how about a micron filter sock?

i dont think you can get a sock to clean down to 1 micron like a diatom filter, you will be amazed on how fast it clears up with a diatom filter. You may have to re-charge it a couple of times to polish the water.

You might want to try leaving your pumps off a day or two and let things just settle.

This will lead to a lot of problems later on, what you are seeing is old ditritus build up, If you can make a trip i'll loan you my diatom filter, or go to a craft store and buy poly fill,the stuff they use to make pillows with, put it in filter and change every day,

McGuyver's got nothin' on me! I went to home depot, got an R/O canister w/ 1/2" connections, some 1/2' vinyl hose, put a micron cartridge in the canister and hooked the whole thing up to a MaxiJet. I'll check on the tank in the morning and see how much this helped. I'm optimistic because it seemed to clear a little before I left.

Nice job! How much was the canister at home depot?
You may be on to something for quick cleanups on small tanks.

The canister was $35 (though I know they sell some that are $19, but were out of stock) and the couplings and hose were maybe another $10. Way less expensive than a diatom filter and it sure did an impressive job on my new 120g tank!
