I havent seen this posted in awhile so just a reminder to whoever uses MAG pumps they use metal screws so if i were you i would definetly change them out for nylon screws.there was a thread a couple years ago of a guy who almost crashed his tank because the screws started to rust..

now how was it that rusty metal screws caused his tank to crash?
I don't get it... cause if it was something like that... no one would use ferric oxide (GFO) to control phosphate in their tanks.

his acros were bleaching out and it was directed at the rusting screws.also the screws can rust through and destroy the pump.it always happens when you least expect it IE vacation.ill find the thread if you want.if i remember correctly it was from a trustworthy guy ShaunW

I still have hesitations with the belief that rusting metal would cause it. Like I said... if that were the case... use of GFO would be questioned. Now if there was something else that came into play as a mixture within the metal which were being released into the water column... That I can believe.

rust in a reef tank is just fine, what do you think is in phosban reactors? ferrous oxide aka rusted iron, granted you dont want your pumps screws rusting out in case you have to take it apart to clean which you should do regularly to keep the pump properly circulating

Everything on that is "probably". It could have been this which led to this for then that happened. Ok. You replaced your screws abd you have piece of mind. Well thats good. But to try and place full blame on a rusting screw... Now what happens when the nylon scrrews you put in start to leach chemicals...? Cause all nylon secretes chemicals.

Thanks for the heads up but it wasn't the rust that caused the bleaching it was whatever leached from the cheaper screws they were using. I thought they changed the screws to Stainless screws or something safer after all the calls about the rusting and leaching like 2-3 years ago. My mag pump is using what looks to be stainless screws, not plated or coated discolored screws like I seen a few years ago.

If your going to throw a valid warning out to people you have to at least take the time to know and explain the real reason why. Its been discussed in a few threads here and on the other reef website in detail why those screws caused problems =0)

Hey skene you know what your right.instead of going out and buying that expensive phosban why dont you go to the junkyard scrape some rust off a piece of iron put it in your reactor and tell us how your tank is doing the next day.if you dont want to change your screws dont.my goodness.maybe instead of plastic reactors they should just make everything iron.would be easier to make and according to skene it will be goodfor out tanks

Wow.. Taking things to heart. Hey I'm giving you good advice on nylon and you try and toss that back. Well whatever. You can find out for yourself and do research in it. There are plenty of websites that explain properties of nylon. ROFL.

and im giving good advise and your throwing it all around.you want to explain the properties of nylon write a thread that explains it.in the meantime you have alot of work going out to the junkyard and collecting rust and switching your tank over to iron pipes for your returns and drain. :) .then you need to make a write up on how well your system is doing since the switch.in the meantime i can say im one less thing being worried if my screws are rusting out and destroying my mag pump and possibly more.
