I am currently running a proclear 75 and am switching and building a diy 10g sump with refugium. I would appreciate if anyone could give advice and a brief explanation on to why particular choices were made. The questions I have are....
1.... Using rubble rock, filter sock, pad or anything else in my overflow chamber.
2.... Using live sand or miracle mud in refugium
3.... What type of light and wattage for fuge light. Will a led fixture be sufficient

Thank you for all advice ahead of time.

What sized tank do you have?

On larger systems a filter sock is used to remove detritus from the water as it enters the sump. Without that sock your sump will get coated in a brown muck that can have a seriously negative effect on tank parameters if left to fester.
Live sand or miracle mud is up to you. A true DSB is more popular in a sump than mud.
Rumble is a site for bacteria fixing.
LED are a great choice for a fuge. Any light that has a color temp over 6000K will work. If its inside a stand then you may have heat issues with a small T5 or PCs.

Thanks...I have a 20g custom thats drilled. After doing some further research the DSB seems like the way to go.
I have never used a filter sock before and am unsure of the maintainence required and frequency. I have always used rubble rock in sumps for the most part as well as some filter floss and pads in other nano tanks.
Seems like many reefers use nothing at all ....which is why I was taking some opinions to assist in my decision making.

1 filter sock holder.
many filter socks. they are machine washable with bleach only... so you can use them over and over and over.
oh and just add a small clean up crew to make sure than any other pieces of detritus that stay in the fuge area is cleaned up afterward.

It's what I have, and wanted to give a DIY a try. If i decide to change up and go bigger it is very inexpensive. So for now just using what I have. Siliconed everything...should be up and running by weekend.
