Never restrict the "in" suction side of a pump

Take the pump to your local home department store, they have all fittings you need. You can buy a threaded to barb hose coupling and a piece of hose, or build your plumbing with rigid pvc pipes. As Kathy stated, no metal in and around your sump, even stainless steel will loose battle with salt.

yeah I got it! i'm all set... no valve (it was wide open anyway) and no more metal hose clamps as well.

my tank finished cycling the other day so i was planning on a 50% water change today anyway
