I was at the swap and was speaking to few people well knowledgeable in fish, inverts, corals ect. Our discussions led us to a quarantine topic. How alot of people have been buying, swapping, trading fish, corals inverts ect. From what was being talked about was the amount of pests that have infiltrated the hobbyists tanks in the past few years. I guess its because of buying from not just one or two sources like we used to in the past, but with the internet we are now buying from everyone and everywhere and you really don't know who you are buying from and what they're tanks look like.
So, here is where I think we should start:

1: we know not all fish need to be quarantined and most fish must so lets start that list on the forum of the fish that don't need it.

2: How about when we know we bought a fish or a coral from someone or somewhere and it has pests. We should note it and have the people that bought from there tell us, yes its pest free or yes it was infested when i got it. At least then we know how long to quarantine or dip to make sure it will be pest free before it enters our display tanks.

3: list a the places that are disease free so we can buy with confidence but still quarantine the goods.

I know someone is gonna say it so ill say it first.
Its the same thing with safe sex, only here its not us but our tanks. We don't want to get that gift that keeps on giving :skull::Yikes::eek:

1. Please tell us, which fish do not need QT...

2. many people don't even know which 'pests' are in their tank

3. even a previously, disease free place can be 'contaminated' by a new fish or coral

IMO...QT all fish

1. There aren't any fish that don't need to be quarantined, as even Mandarins and Eels, with the their thinks slim coated body, can and do get ich. You also need to worry also about others diseases, like Gill Flukes and such that not only attack the fish gills and body but also their eyes, which can very easily be introduced into your MT. You also need to worry about bacterial infections too, it's a very big risk to just introduce a fish to your MT without being 100% sure a fish is free of diseases and parasites. In the end, it's better to have a fish dies in QT than to take a risk and wiping out your MT.

2. Members have posted about stores that have problems in their tanks, things like Flatworms and such. So that is out there but livestock changes so much at store you really need to be careful and dip all your corals, or quarantined them if you can. As for members, and if they have things in their tanks, well some members have posted that they have flatworms or have had problems with red bugs. A big thing is most members don't say if they've have had ich in their tanks. A lot of people buy LR and or corals and introduced ick into their tanks. I think it's important that people do ask before buying anything, and that should cover not only the corals requirement but if the person selling has had any pest or problems in their tank.

3. Finding good livestock is very important, the only problem is with consistent changing livestock even the best places are going to go through periods where they get some type of parasite or infection running though their systems. Even with the places that quarantine their fish or corals, I still wouldn't place anything directly into my tank.

Bottom line is you need to QT all fish and dip all corals and QT the ones that cannot be dipped if you want to keep your tank pest free.

As mentioned not everyone who has a pest/disease issue is aware of it and then there are others who may have had an issue in the past that is now resolved and yet others who had an issue which they think they addressed that is in fact still a problem in their tanks.

..and don't forget about algae issues where the seller may scrape it off the frag yet 2 months later you have bubble algae popping up all over your tank.

IMO blacklisting stores/members is an extremely poor idea. Should a private seller tell a prospective buyer of any known issues..yes they should but good luck getting a store to do that..they'd be out of business in no time.

Bottom line is - buyer beware. QT everything and be personally responsible for your own reef.

I agree with Kathy, But I like the qt topic. Do all fish have same requirements for qt?
I dipped my corals before putting in display tank, they were mostly zoos and Palys though. Which corals shouldn't be dipped?, what would y ou use to qt fish and corals? I thought that's what this thread was going to be.... Still can be i guess

All corals need to be dipped
It's certain fish that don't and certain inverts that don't carry parasites.
To be clear, I quarantine all my fish and dip all my corals
Chromis was the only fish I didn't quarantine, but that's just me and that specific fish
