Hi, I bought a used remora with a Maxijet 1000 on it.. It worked fine, but I wanted a little more power so I switched the 1000 with a Maxijet 1200. Now the skimmer has been running for 3 days and I've gotten no skimmate (although the skimmer is producing bubbles). I used pliers to tighten the plastic ring connecting the powerhead to the skimmer and don't know what other steps to take. Is my powerhead too weak or did I miss a step?

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,
Alex

Never heard of a MJ1000....
But yep......like Savager stated, the skimmer needs to "break in."
Set the collection cup @ it's lowest setting, then adjust as it starts skimming (to either wet or dry).

If you touch anything on the skimmer it will take a while for it to 'break in' again. Try to touch anything on it w/ your bare hands otherwise the oils in your skin will break up the bubbles and stop skimmate from forming...

Thanks! Yeah, I bought the remora used and it came with a maxijet "1000", I had to look it up online.. it moves around 270 GPH and is discontinued. I will let the skimmer run, but its been at its lowest setting for a few days, and the bubbles just don't get high enough to produce any skimmate. Maybe it needs a good cleaning...

I would normally blame this on lowish nutrients in the tank (my hair algae does an excellent job of absorbing excess nutrients :) ) but I had a large conch dead in there for about two days before I realized it was dead, and it fouled the water terribly (and fouled my apartment with its wretched stink when I removed it from the tank). There's no way the skimmer could have endured that without skimming if it was working properly.

No it's just that as the 1/2 inch worth of bubles burst in the tube it covers the tube in slime, making it slippery. Now the 1/2" or bubbles rise that much higher in the tube. After a day or so they will have made their way up to the top. The "Break In Period" refers to the length of time that it takes for the skimmer to get its tube coated so that the bubles can reach the collection cup. The break in period can be 12-36 hours or so. Turning it off for 15 minute intervals here and there won't matter.
