i don't you would need a skimmer if you do weekly water changes no matter what you keep in there. but i'm holding you to the weekly water changes.

just cuz you change your water doesnt mean there is no crap in your waters ,the sec you do a water change there is still slim ,poop and crap in your tank ,also if you put a skimmer on fresh RO/DI water you wil get skimmate as well

How many fish and inverts do you have in the tank?
how large are they
how much and how many times do you feed
what chemicals do you add to the tank
you have a skimmer that's removing some type of skimmate then why are you considering removing it?
how large are the water changes your doing
why do you feel the need to do water changes

these are all questions I hope you take into consideration before deciding to remove a filter to a (hopefully) healthy system. I don't understand what your trying to fix by removing a skimmer.

The real question is if you have a 6gal bb tank and do weekly water changes you shouldn't be getting a lot of foam from your protein skimmer unless your over feeding, have to many fish or things are dying in your tank.

There probably was never a need to have a Remora protein skimmer on the tank to begin with.

And this is where the debate starts.

You are not eliminating the need for a skimmer by doing water changes. The water change does not remove everything from your water, you're just diluting it. Like Ronen said, as soon as you finish your w/c, your inhabitants are producing more waste. Before that, you didn't even remove 100% of the waste anyway.....unless of course you did a 100% w/c.

I have a tiny 16 gallon nano. Probably has 12 or 13 gallons of water in it. I do a 3 gallon w/c every week and I skim 24/7. Is this right for you? I can't answer that. However, Sean said it best:

Jon, it's not broke, don't try to fix it.

once a week a get about 1/4 of a cup of stuff...just have 2 fish..and all coral..

then you dont need it for 1/4 (4oz?)cup of junk a week ,save your money
just make sure para in the WC are the same as your tank

CC, there is definitely some conflicting theories here. I suggest keeping your skimmer running. There is more usefulness to it than removing DOC's. It helps immeasureably with oxygen exchange as well.
