Hello all,

I'm wondering if anyone in this area mentioned above would like to become friends and learn about eachothers tanks. I ask this because i would love to have someone care for my tank during a vacation and vice versa. I understand TRUST is an issue so i'm willing to take the time and get to know some of you. I live on queens blvd, near midway movie theatre. I realize now that i need someone who UNDERSTANDS what these tanks need and is WILLING to do it. In return, i will understand your tank and when you need a hand or vacation, i'll be there to help. Its all about peace of mind while away. I did spend the $ on exotic fishies and cant take a risk while being away. Corals im not to worried about. My fish and eel i am! Im male, 36, and trustworthy. Hope someone is truely interested, if not, i'll never vacation again...lol

That's a tough thing... trust is very key in this hobby.
I know there are only so many people I would allow to tend to my tank at all while I am away.

thanks, i already have an ATO installed...i will add a auto feeder ASAP. Guess maybe just overly concerned.

for basic feeding and top offs I have my brother do it. if it's anything else, I ask one of my friends that's also on the forum.. we help each other on that end when he goes on vacation.

but yes you can always get an auto feeder and ato... but your eel would starve :lol2: if he didnt eat flakes or pellets. Then again... I'm sure he would find something to eat in the tank.

As mentioned - it's tough to just open your door to someone you have basically met on the internet to take care of your tank.

Better that a family member do it, or a long time friend, and you have a fellow reefer who that person can call when things don't seem to be quite right.

Pre-planning is critically when you have a reef tank and are going away and it can't be done the night before. The tank needs to be in tip top shape for weeks with as many systems automated as possible..and checked to see they are working properly.

I personally package all of the food for my tanks and the time(am or pm)/date they are to be fed - in individual envelopes, what to watch out for ...I leave little notes on things..like pull this plug if the tank is full of bubbles..don't add more food if you see any in the tank..check this temp every day, call me if it changes...

IMO better to trust a family member or good friend until you have built up more time in this hobby and dealt with others from buying /selling, attending MR events and knowing their knowledge level of the hobby.
If you don't know anyone well enough and have a vacation planned, you can also get the number for a local maintenence company that can be called in an emergency.

i have my reefkeeper monitor levels. top off full. and i do a water change night before i leave and do a water change day i come back. i leave my mom in charge of feeding. she comes over every other day to feed and she changes out the filter pad. that it. i have gone away twice already and have good success with mom. i always get worried though if there is a power outage while im gone...then my mom wont kno wat to do.

I wish I had some one to call just in case but I don't. so I got an Neptune apex to monitor and turn off equipment if Necessary. Got a sensor to detect any water on the floor. Then I also set up a remote web cam using my laptop and could see my tank from my iPhone. Being able to look at my tank while out of the country put me at ease during my two week vacation. But most important is what Kathy said about having your tank running well before you leave. My tank was set up before vacation before I started packing lol

I make Skene drive to BK and take care of my tank and cat when im gone. not bad for a bottle of grey goose!
