Having looked at A LOT of tanks over the last few weeks I still can't make the move to LED's as much as the "Tech" guy in me says I want to. The growth with LED's is impressive to say the least. I would put it above T5 but less than what a 12-14K metal halide can do. I also see the "washed out/flat look" that many speak of with LED setups.

You need to look at the pro's and cons.

LED's are very efficient , low heat and no bulb changes. Flat color with almost all makes except perhaps the Radions. Cost: An arm and a leg at the minimum...

Halides are inefficient, run hot and require bulb changes but my god the shimmer and growth!

T5's are more efficient than MH's, run cooler, require bulb chnages and offer very good growth. The ability to change bulbs and their position creates MANY different lighting options and are the most affordable out of the bunch.

For me a MH/T5 combo cannot be touched by any LED out right now for growth and color.

The thing that still amazes me is the cost of LED's. All we here is they are going to come down. Really? When? If anything I see the prices staying the same.

I have seen some very nice LED lit tanks but NONE of them compare to Jerl77's or MBG75's T5/Reefbrite combo as far as color/visual appeal and balanced growth goes.

JMO.....

I think acan LEDs need to be higher than they recommend 12 to 16" above waterline. There mounting legs keep the fixtures to close to the water IMO!
+1 Just moved mine abou 10" above the water line and it has made a big difference.
Disclaimer: I like all lights even power compacts look good. If you diagree. Go look at a red sea max sometime. "the magic tank" anything will flourish in it. Who knows why???:scratchch
