i bought a brute trash can awhile back because everyone told me that they are food grade containers. i honestly don't think they are because when i make my RO water it always comes out at TDS 0 but when it sits in my 15 gallon brute mixing bucket it gets all the way up to .16. i wipe it down after every use so its not dirty i think its just leaching something into the water. does anyone know where i can get a true food grade container on the island? or direct me to a website where i could order one.

Do you keep it covered at all times?

Brute cans are food safe.

If you are not washing it out really well & wiping down/drying the inside after you have made SW in it, then yes, you can easily get a TDS reading due to residual salt mix in there.

have you ever tested the tds of saltwater? its very high with a tds meter. so what kathy said pretty much seems like the answer to your problems :). i would get one bucket for pure rodi water and one for saltwater mixing.

i do i put my ro water in 5 gallon buckets and that tds is 0 and then i dump three 5 gallon buckets in my 15 gallon mixing container and i let it sit for a little before i add salt. test the tds and its always above .10

As I said...if you are mixing SW in that container and not rinsing it out - you WILL get a TDS reading.

When I did my last water change I had about 2 or 3 inches of new SW left in my 32G Brute, I left it in there and added about 20G+ of new rodi water to (my rodi is 0 TDS)..and the current reading in that can ...just now was...172.

Your .10+ is to be expected if you don't wash out the container :)
I would not worry about it.
