I personally saw it swimming irregularly after a food session. I then noticed that the mouth was not closing completely as it normally does, heavy breathing [ie full gills extended], starting to lay on it's side, then I saw the food in it's mouth with a little bit hanging out.

I knew it had to be it so I proceeded.

Paul, by the way, how do you get the fish to stay still while your performing your procedure? Did you keep the fish damp or something while doing this? I would be scared messing with an eel.

the eel took a few people and a t shirt. the puffer was just in some wet cotton and i kept dipping him in the water. i am very surprised he lived as i did not close the wound. but it healed nicely and he just had a small scar for the rest of his life.
