I have had my 18 inch eel now about 3-4 weeks. When i first got him i waited three days and attempted to feed him and he went after the food pretty aggressively ( raw shrimp cut into peices ) Second feeding about a week later also shrimp, and he slowly came out and it took a while for him to actually grab the food and eat it. The third attempt at feeding now with silversides and squid and he has become so scared/reclusive that he actually hides when i try to feed him. When he sees me approach the tank he goes deeper into the rocks then he already was. This eel does not stick his head out from the rocks and pretty much conceals himself all day. At night he does swim somewhat within the rocks and has one spot that he will sometimes stick his head out like a normal eel. Well, im getting worried about him eating! What i have been doing is just slipping a whole silverside within the rocks hoping HE eats it eventually. I dont want to keep up with this method for the ovious reasons. I think the meat is dissappearing but not 100% sure if the eel ate it or it has moved to a place behind the rocks where i cant see it. I understand eels can live for very long periods of time without eating but when do i worry? Also how much and often should i feed him? He is 18 inches long. His color looks great and is alert when i shine a light at him breifly. I see no signs of starvation (from what i know) and all my fish and corals are doing the same/well. I never owned an eel and dont know their behaviors. What would all you do? Thanks chris

just an update: My eel has settled in now and seems to have adjusted to TANK life. He has been eating really well this week and finally seems to understand that i'm only trying to feed him. So far he only eats raw shrimp soaked in selcon. He is reclusive so i just stick my feeder tongs in front of any cave and within about 3 minutes he appears and now grabs the shrimp with authority. He did fast for about 3 whole weeks so newbies keep that in mind. Also totally reef safe, wont harm anything in this tank. Thats it. Also noticed DD has these often now.
