getting the refractometer tomorrow. i got 3 blue damsels and 3 chromis on friday along with 10 lbs of live rock on thursday. so now its just a waiting game. got a sand sifting goby yesterday. salinity is 27 spec grav 1.020. now i am getting paid tomorrow. so i would like to know what my next steps are. again i am going fish only with live rock. so im thinkin another 10lbs of rock? and another aquaclear 70? or should i wait a while before i put another filter onto the tank so the bacteria builds up more? still uneducated on the saltwater. learning as i go. wanted to discuss some stocking options for my tank... any ideas? 46 bow

Next step is to wait a couple weeks. If you keep saying that you are new to SW..... forget it. Good luck with your tank

I don't understand why the salinity is still so low. Most lfs have their water at 1.024 the acclimation must be a little rough on the fish.

Not really, only the good ones do.;) The others keep their fish at about 1.018, sometimes even lower.:(

Why did you put fish in a tank that has not cycled yet? Please don't say to help the cycle.............. That is not cool.:( Poor little guys are going to go through all the poison the tank goes through. High levels of Ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates are not for any living animal to be subjected.
Is there someone that can hold them for you until the tank is able to support them? Say; in a few weeks to 2 months.

Glad you are getting a refractometer!!

Hopefully we shop at the good ones and he isn't using the fish to cycle.

what fish store did you go to? are you just following their advice?
each time you add live rock, you're starting another cycle, how big of a cycle depending on how much rock and how much die off you have. as soon as you take the live rock out of water, you start to have die off.
as someone mentioned in an earlier post, please do some more reading and understand the sequence of setting up a tank before you add anymore things to the tank.
learning as you go will cost you quite a bit of headache and possibly big sum of money. also think of the well being of the animals you put into the tank. one of the reasons you started this probably was to enjoy the animals and hopefully try your best to care for them. fish only or not, sw set up is much more delicate than a fw set up.

here is a great easy to understand book.

sorry guys. i did set the tank up and lps did say my tank cycled already and that it was okay to add a few starters. i havent lost any fish yet but hopefully i dont. i am going to buy the refractometer today along with two powerheads for circulation. the lps i go to sells the live rock by lbs and when bought they give you water to cover rock for transport. now i only have between 10-12 lbs. i know i should have more but im really looking for a nice good looking big piece to put in the center of the aquarium. ive been shopping around lps. thanks for all the feedback. this has been a great help to me. will update later when i purchase more equip in a few hours. maybe load some pcs. and i have been doing reading and researching its just seems better to me to get advice from real keepers instead of a book. (just my way of thinking)

I totally understand where you are coming! There are many people in the world like you!!! We all learn differently.;) Plus you can't beet the inter active part of the forums vs a book.:dog2:

Do your self a favor though; Be very careful with the advice you get from the lfs. Most of the time they just want to sell you merchandise. Some times the advice given is spot on, other times they don't know what they are talking about, and worse case scenario; they will lie just so that they can make a sale.;) So unless you know them personally, and feel that you can trust them, and know for a fact that they know what they are talking about take everything they say to you with a grain of salt.;)

You should not have to feel that you need to apologize for asking a question. Just please be mindful that having any tank be it salt or fresh water you are taking on a HUGE responsibility to the animals you will be keeping. Please don't add any more animals until you are finished adding your rocks, and the tank is fully stable. This is for the safety & security of the animals, and of course your wallet as well.;)

You're so nice! I just read through this thread and had the same thoughts but they wouldn't have come out nearly as nicely as yours did. That's what we need more of around here!

LOL Thank you howze! I guess it comes with age, and raising 4 kids!!
Besides, I just don't see the need to be nasty to one another.:) We are suppose to be family, and as such we should show some respect to one another.

It does no one any good to be nasty, to be-little, insult, or threaten another. If a person is that angry that they have the need to do the previous, then I believe that they need to get some help. To me; people who go about putting others down only show that they feel they are inferior.:)

Besides, haven't you heard? "You catch more flies with honey then with vinegar."
