Brown spot algae that can't be removed

So I've recently developed some brown spot algae on my glass (well, acrylic). It's creeping up from the bottom. Spots range from tiny to about the head of a pin or slightly larger.

Problem is, it's *extremely* tough. I can't remove it with multiple passes of my hammerhead magnetic cleaner. Also tried a stick cleaner and the acrylic safe head. Can't get it off. Tonight I tried a towel and elbow grease - ie with my hands in the tank rubbing. Still no dice. Maybe a *slight* improvement. I'm going to change the pad on my magnetic cleaner and hope that helps but I'm not optimistic given that it didn't budge with my scrubbing by hand. I don't dare to scrape because My tank is acrylic.

Tank has been up since early November. 2 chromis, lots of snails f various type, blue and scarlet crabs, a peppermint, some coral frags. LED lights...I go 100% dark for 4 hours a night over night.

What is it and how do I remove it...

I'm saying it may be coralline.It starts as brown cause diatom is more of a powder and easy to remove.

Yeah it must be coraline. It's tough as steel. Jeebus. I have the Kent scraper and have tried working it with the plastic scrapy dealie. It's uh... hard work. I'm going to try a combination of that, a cc, and something called a Dobie pad http://www.freshdirect.com/category...gro_sctchbrte_dobie&rank=1&trk=srch&trkd=relv which apparently is effective against coraline and doesn't butcher acrylic. At least that's what the internet says and everything you read on the internet is true right?

I'd be careful with anything that has a sharp edge since you have acrylic. I also have those brown/olive green spots and its coralline. Rather have the pink/purple variety but that's slowly coming along.

They make brushes for acrylic tanks, which will let you scrub very hard without scratching the acrylic. I use them on my tanks, when I get tough algae spots that I can't remove with the magnet, and never have scratched my tanks. They sell them at most LFS, just make sure that they're the brushes for acrylic tanks.
