Looks like it's basically a fan. The sponge holds some water that will make it feel cooler for a person because of "evaporative cooling." You don't need this for a tank because there's already evaporative cooling going on from the surface of the tank when a fan blows across it. That's why you need to add so much more top off water.

Doesn't matter. The more air it moves, the better. A larger fan will move more air at fewer rpms and therefore be less noisy. Noise may not be a huge factor in our systems given all the other loud sounds the pumps and water make.

fan

I personally use the fans they use at nail salons.
Industrial grade, Powerful with low and high settings.
I can reduce my water temperature 4 degrees easy with 1 fan for my 30G cube.

And they are dirt cheap. $10 in chinatown, NY

RE: Nail fan

Sorry for the late reply.
Didn't see this forum on the nail fan till just now.

I don't remember the name of the place unfortunately.
But, you can google Nail supply store in chinatown, ny.
There should be only one at the end of the manhattan bridge. Away from the Holland tunnel.
If you can't find the place on google it is about 1-2 blocks away from the corner of Bowery St. and Canal St. opposite way of Holland tunnel.

If you find the place on google you can call them for the Seiko nail fan if they have it in stock for confirmation.

I have the fan set to low always. These fans are alot more powerful than the one's you get at TARGET. lol.
In the summer if it gets really really hot just leave your AC on full time. The electric bill comes out the same and they are MORE reliable than most chillers.

Good luck.

Never tried one but have used cheap $15 clip on fan between mh and water surface it worked great but evap went up 50%

Yikes. I have the cheap $15 clip on fan over my sump where it does not seem to be doing much. So if I move it over the DT, beneath the MHs, it may actually work? I'm cool with the increased evap as I use ATO/KW to supply calc/alk. I'll move it tomorrow, thanks! Love this place. :pimp:
