So finally I have gotten sick of looking at it so how do I clean it. I seems to be hard water staining on the top few and bottom few inches of the glass. I have tried razor blades but like I said it is a staining and basically as smooth as the glass so it does not work. It was there when I got the tank used but not as bad. Now it's really getting to me. Basically it looks like a fogging of the glass. Algae builds up pretty quick on those areas but come off easily with razor/scrapers. For what it's worth this was a freshwater aquarium before I got it and it seems the prior owner just let water evaporate for awhile before draining. Then when it the bottom just let the remaining water/sand just sit till it all evaporated off. I have seen some glass cleaners available but all say to not use in a running tank. Do I stand a chance here? Thanks in advance for the assist.

one product you might want to look into is clearshield's Limescale Remover. I am not sure if it's made for fish tanks, but the product page does say it can be used "in a marine environment."

I have a coffee table tank and the same thing happened to my glass that sits on top. I was never able to remove it and I tried a million things. I thought maybe it was something from the light being directly on it because it was only under where the light was.

Had the same problem with a 20gal I let sit with water in it. With the tank lying on it's side so that the stain was on the bottom ,I laid some paper towels over the stains and saturated them with white vinegar and let them sit for a day . I repeated this for each stain . Then I cleaned it and refilled it with fresh water water and the stains were gone. I had also used a razor blade to scrape each stain before this but the stains were still there. Also when Iwas done I could still see the stains but when I put water in it , they dissappeared
