charliethetuna88, how long is a long time?
After insects snails are part of the largest animal group, estimated up to 150,000 species. There's a good chance these snails can destroy a live sand bed.

I'll vouch for the Marsh Periwinkle Snails, as for I have a few in my tank. They seem to do a better job then the store bought ones, don't disturb the corals as much, provide the occasional snack for my mantis shrimp (aka the Clicker), & oh yea they are freagin free!

One thing though, I would be more worried about them bringing in some unknown parasite, bacteria, ...etc into the tank. What I did was to leave them in a small tank & let the water evaporate & get gradually more saltier, then I did the reverse (dec salinity over time). Hopefully, this took care of things?

IME, cerith snails wont kill clams. They are herbivorous/scavenger.
There are two possibilities, you have pyramidellids some look like ceriths and are ectoparasitic.
Or they are cerith snails, and the clam was alive but decaying.
Chances are it was the latter of the two.
