i had a hard time deciding on this as well.
there are a ton of things to consider. the easiest is what do you plan on keeping for livestock. i like the wrasse family and sand serves a purpose for them, same blue spot jaw fish and im sure a host of others. from what i have read, mostly here, is that a dsb creates a natural benefit to the aquarium. if you go 2" or less, many critters can keep it clean and serves an esthic purpose (what i decided on)

Before i used to have sand on my tank, but then eventually i removed it because i reckon that it takes more time to clean it out, having the fact that i clean my tank fairly regularly i decided to go bare although i must admit that i did not look aethetically pleasing like when there was actually sand plus the fact that you could put more decorations to it when there is sand but then i was just being practical because i don't have much time these days so i decided to go bare
