no it did not, but i reduced my feedings and perform weekly water changes now...i have decided once a month to shut off my lights for 48 hours just to mimic a storm...i like what it did for my corals.

Never saw a storm that kept the area completely dark for 48 hours :scratchch The change is maintenance is doing more for your tanks good health than the lights out routine.

So who has had experience with chemical warfare and Cyano? Or other methods? I'm getting frustrated.

I've done lights out twice... definitely works at killing the Cyano off....but then it comes back a day or so later, if not sooner. Before my latest lights off (this is the 2nd or 3rd time) it was horrible. Creeping up over all my low lying corals...it was starting to climb on my Acan, zoas, and chalice and was getting close enough to my hammer where i could tell it was ticked off. Also, lights off is fine...but I can see that my SPS's are not 100% pleased. I assume they'll just come back, but it still worries me.

I have 2 islands...it grows in the middle of the two, on the left side between the rock and the glass, and across PART of the front. Oddly, not on the right side between the glass and the rock. It's even more odd to me because of that symmetry My PH's are 2 Mp10's placed symmetrically on opposite sides so...

Phosphates are 0 ish. Nitrates 0. Lights are all LED, which I thought was supposed to mitigate "nuisance algae". I run HC GFO, carbon and UV.

I've seen it in my refugium too, which is just a partitioned section of my sump. I'm wondering if that has something to do with it and if i should just bomb out my sump, clean it out, toss the macro and rocks, and start over a new fuge. Macro is cheap and I have plenty of dry rubble laying around.

cyano

I did lights out for 3 days last week and some of the rocks was completely clear but there were 3 spots where i could see it was still there. then the following day i saw the bubbles at night and knew the cyano was coming back.

I dosed the tank with Red Slime Remover last night. Waiting 48 hours then dosing it again. Ill post results after.

only thing is that my skimmer has the waste valve completely open and still overflowing so i had no choice but to unplug the skimmer

if its coming back, especially in hours or days you still have a nutrient issue. My 3.5 days completely killed off all cyano and hair algae. Since then i perform weekly water changes now to make sure the nutrients don't reach to a point where the cyano will start feeding. I honestly have had not an issue since. I myself finished 48 hrs w/o lights this month and still think it benefits MY tank...fish hate it thou

Anytime you dose red slime remover....

The skimmer needs to be off the whole time you are treating. You skimmer will overflow everytime you dose red slime.

Hey BaaMNYC, how did the Red Slime Remover work out? Was it effective, and more importantly, how has your livestock responded to the treatment?

My Cyano continues to come back right in the middle of my tank, up front, between my 2 islands, and then to the right along the front, stopping before hitting the edge of the right island. Oddly, it hasn't come back on the left side, in between my left island and the glass, where it used to be thickest (like quarter inch) and hardest to deal with. Do. Not. Get. It.

Red slime remover worked great. All livestock seemed completely unaffected except my blue sponge. It faded quite a bit.

The cyano was completely gone in two or three days. I didn't have to treat a second time.

Are you sure you're having enough flow there in the part in the middle?

That's good to hear.

Yeah I guess that might be part of it. I'm thinking about scooting my mp10's forward an inch...maybe more of the undertow will make it into the space between the islands? I'm certainly not about to get another mp10 for the back wall...plus...3 Vortech's in a 50g tank? Seems like serious overkill. Unless I cram a Koralia or something in the gap, on the back wall, blowing out.

I've also toyed with the idea of putting a rock or rocks in the gap and thusly building it up some. I don't know if that would accomplish anything though. Plus my fish like swimming through that big gap.

Very frustrating. Last night I got the turkey baster out and sucked out A LOT. Stupid bubbly red slimey hair. I wish something ate it. Even with my fighting conch's stirring up the sand, it comes back.

you have three mp10? I wont even begin to guess what you need or dont need in terms of water flow. I think a koralia on the back wall couldn't hurt except for aesthetics it might stand out. I brought up the flow because I read the possible reasons for red slime may be due to lack of sufficient flow, thats why i mentioned it.

But like i said red slime remover worked wonders for me and its been about a month now? there are no signs of it coming back. I also reduced my feeding regiment because i believe it was due to overfeeding and i slacked off on my water changes.

No, I only have the 2x Mp10s...that's what I meant...3 would be majorly overkill. And my wallet would not be happy with me. LOL You're 100% right about the aesthetics though...any PH on the back wall in my small tank would be hideous. The cyano collects across the front too, so it's not exclusive to the inter-island gap. Actually it's worse across the front right now, right side. Hmm Maybe I'll scoot the right hand mp10 forward a little more.

We'll see how things progress in the coming weeks. Maybe I'll go with the chemical approach if it doesn't get better. I've seen it suggested that it tends to bloom in the spring, for whatever reason.

NO3 = 0 and PO4 = 0 or as close to 0 as my eyes can tell on the stupid colored water phosphate test, so it's not nutrients. My fish inhale all the food I feed, so I don't think I'm over feeding. Skimmer is pulling out a highly offensive smelling dark green tea. Yum.
