this may be a stupid question but can one use lava rock as base rock in a reef? if so what parameters will it affect if any?

You want to get coral lite rock, which looks like the picture below, Most places sell it for under $1@lb.

deanos what do they mean by tested lava rock? i have a beautiful piece of lava rock that i could use in my reef. how do i go about testing it?

With Lava rock you can introduce a lot of unwanted thing, minerals into your tank, which includes iron and other heavy metals not to mention phosphourous and sulphur. These rocks maybe fine for fresh water but can cause big problems in saltwater tank, specially reef tanks. It's best to pass on them.
