Have a problem need advice.

Ok, so today my landlord inform me that there are termites in the house, so he told me he need to hire terminator and chemical "bomb" the whole house and all of us (dog included) need to be outside of the house during the process. Now I am concern about my tanks and the livestock in it so I told him to give me sometime to figure out what to do.

Question to you guys/girls, what would you do if you are me? I am thinking about covering and taping up the whole tank, thats still a project cuz I have to take apart the filtration system on all 4 of my tanks. I really need some input or ideas.

You are smart to be uber concerned. With some planning you should be able to protect your tank, but it will take considerable preparation.

1 - Completely cover all areas around the tank and just as important, the sump.
2 - Provide a fresh air vent to your sump.
3 - Run carbon, actively, not passively.
4 - No lights during the covered period.
5 - No need to feed during this time either. Your critters will be fine.
6 - Keep excellent flow and good surface agitation.

I might have missed something, but this will certainly be a good start.

I agree with the poly filter, or at least having it on hand and available if needed.

thanks guys, especially Russ. I am planing to tap up all the open areas that so no air can get into the system, and I don't have a sump, just hob refugium. I was gonna take all the equipment and put it in the 20g bucket and put the cover on, tap up tank and leave the house... dont know if having the tank completely seal off from the outside world for a couple of hours is a good idea though.

what i would do... if you have someone that can hold onto the loose corals for you until the job is done

If you need to get fresh air in run a flex dryer vent pipe and on the out side put a small box fan to force air in to the covered system if you have positive air pressuer going in it should keep the air in the room out

This would make me very tense.


You may want to talk with the people who will be doing the pest control work. Some of them use an orange scented pesticide and say it?s not harmful to food, people, and pets (at least that?s what they advertise). If they don?t use the orange stuff maybe they can also make some recommendations on how to protect your livestock.

a little update, just found out that from the pest control that he will only do it in the basement, and see how that goes b/c he believe that only the basement have the problem. I am somewhat relieved.
