i think i saw it on a cichlid forum but never on a saltwater forum. you know how a fan moves from side to side, well why can't that be created w/ our powerheads? you could put the PH @ the end of a thin pvc pipe. @ the other end, out of the tank you can attach a lever. everytime you pull or push on the lever it causes the pvc to rotate and thus causing the PH to swing from side to side.

hehehe...umm....there is something kind of like that already

The problem is that the rotating mechanism gets jam and leads to powerhead breakdown.

I read a thread on RC about this before and I believe some people have made them like you are explaining. Let me see if I can dig up the thread....

That's really cool with the DIY swirley. However, IMO having a big black box hanging on the top of my tank is oooougly. Unless you can hide it in a hood or something. Also, don't want pieces of PVC sticking out from my tank. Someone needs to give the design a cleaner look.

I know what you mean Scarf, those do suck big-time.

froggie like you said the big black box on top can be hidden in your canopy, and if the PH is placed behind LR all that may be visible is some of the pvc which will get covered in coraline within time

Why don't we solve the water movement crisis by just adding a pump instead of modified powerheads. I am thinking about it, I can get rid of 2 powerheads (probably put them in the sump). Calvin's (nyfatcow) setup had a pump in the tank but he had some additional plumbing done to direct waterflow.

I propose just adding the pump, (suction to back and covered with rocks) and let it do it's thing, even manipulate the output flow with directional piping....

And with the extra powerhead in the sump, I'll have water flowing so good it wouldn't know what direction it's going in........:spin: :biglaugh: :splitspin ....how's that..!!!!

let me be more clear my concern is the bottom of the tank. since i have a lot of LR i believe the flow in my tank is being limited. i already have a seio820,620,maxijet1200 and the two returns from my 9.5 mag in my 40br. i don't want to put another PH in there that would be ridiculous. all of these are @ the top portion of the tank. i guess i should bring one down lower.
my concern is that most PH just point @ one direction.

VJ i know what you are talking about i bought one of those systems from him and have it set up in my 30. i love it. there's no way i can put one in the 40 i would have to do the whole rockwork again. too much hassle

If you dont want all the powerheads and you want a cleaner look and you want a guaranteed shitload of flow get a Tunze Stream or a vortech. Its that simple. Sell off all your other powerheads. Put the Stream on a controller and be done with it. No crazy contraptions or anything. For a 40g all you need is a Tunze 6000 with a single controller. Set it on a pulse and You will be without a doubt pleased with effects. The flow from the streams and vortechs is broad enough to cover your entire tank.

thanks herman. i thought the tunze would be overkill but its worth the try. i will do that.

Dave (Spykes) uses the 6000 and a single controller on his 40g. Without the controller you can throttle the stream down to 30% oof the total power. The single controller basically lets you adjust the % of total power from 30% to 100% in a pulsing manner thus creating wave ripples on the top of your tank while creating wave like motion within the tank. It also includes a feed button, when pressed the pump basically turns off for 8 minutes so your fish etc can feed in peace. It starts back up automatically.

Whats nice about the streams is that your whole tank will get flow from just one powerhead. If in the future you decide to upgrade all you need to do is change the transformer of the stream to a larger one making it a 6100 stream as the powerhead itself is identical. The components of the streams retain their value very well and they sell so quickly.
