i also believe that a good ballast (IC) definitly makes the difference...IMHO

Yep....

T:
The #'s you posted depends on the ballast.
The output color of the bulb also depends on which ballast you are using.

I told you this already!

hmmm.... looks like the luminarcs are out of business. would it be worth the extra $$$ to buy one of those (some sites still have extra stock) over the Spider?

It shold fit. The Lumenarc III minis are 14.5"square. Click on the image in the pacific garden supply site to get the exact dimensions. That is one purchase you will not regrett!!!

well the hood will be big enough to fit the non-mini (though I'd probably get the mini...)... what I was looking at was more the weird vents going off the sides- they just looked like they would get in the way of mounting that to a hood... never seen one in person so I was just wondering...

So it looks like my future lighting set up is now...

250w Radium
PFO HQI ballast
Lumenarc mini reflector

Nice!

I'm running my XM 250 bulbs with IC ballasts and luminarcs. I swear by it. I had to modify my hood to fit the reflectors, but it was easy and it looks great. The spread of the lunimarcs is amazing. As for color, I run 3 bulbs with luminarcs. 20,000k on the outside with a 10,000k in the middle. The mix looks great with no actinic supplementation and you still get the better PAR.
