Vortech Mp10w ES / Battery backup

Going to buy A Vortech next month just want to know a little more about them.
The website said they can be turned down to 200gph. i only have a 14 gal Biocube with the surge option can you limit the peak out put? i think 1,575 gph would send some fish air born in that small of a tank.
Now if you can limit the peak surge should be about 600gph peak down to 200gph or do you think i could get away with a little more?

Now for the Battery Backup can I plug my main pump into that or does it only accept Vortechs and is it worth the money?
