Stupid question which I pretty much know the answer to, but is there any such thing as a reef safe turtle? (Question inspired by the picture on the opening page of this website).

From what I remember it is against the law to own any marine turtle. Am I right on this?

(The below comments are Fred talking out of his a$$, he has no scientific basis for his comments and is speaking "off the top of his head" based on memories as a child.)

I think that turtles for the most part live longer then we do so make sure you kids can maintain your reef when you're gone. Also marine turtles get VERY large and may want to commute thousands of miles during breeding seasons. It might be better (and cheaper) to tag an actual marine turtle in the wild and occainsionally go visit him. :wink1:

if anyone wants to help out the sea turtles here is a great way.

Adopt A Sea Turtle

for only $35.00 you can have your very own sea turtle :D

That's much cheaper than building the 1,000,000 gallon plus tank you
would need to keep him in your backyard :)

Marine turtles are illegal to buy for your aquarium. Marine turtles live over 100 years, but that is not true for fresh water/brackish turtles. Lifespan for them is about 25 years. Turtles are dirty. Many people I know who keep them run filters and also keep a hose in the tank that is constantly on with a drain on the other end so their water is constantly being changed.
Aaron, fresh water turtles under 4 inches cannot be sold (although they are all the time) because they carry salmonella.
In my avitar, you can see my Diamondback Terrapin, Dave. He is a brackish water turtle. Between the cost of lighting, filtration and maintenance, one or 2 of these guys will cost you as much as a reef.
